Self-confidence is trusting your own abilities and valuing yourself. A lack of self-confidence can hold you back from pursuing your best life. You might be too scared to go for a promotion at work or ask someone out on a date.
But how do you overcome that fear? By taking actions to improve your competence, self-image and self-belief, you can boost your self-confidence.
1. Think about how you think about yourself
Get to know yourself. Start listening to your thoughts. Write them down. Thank about why you feel this way.
Reflect on the negative thoughts you have about yourself. Ask yourself what can be done about them. Shut them away. Think about your limitations, and whether they’re real limitations or ones you’ve placed there.
Think about the good things about yourself, the things you do well, the things you like. Focus on them. Revisit them often.
2. Empower yourself
One of the surest ways to empower yourself is through knowledge. By becoming more knowledgeable, you’ll become more confident.
The Internet is a great tool to expand your knowledge, but so are the people around you, as well as books, magazines, and educational material. Educate yourself, question the way things are, learn a language, expand your knowledge.
3. Set small, achievable goals
If you initially aim too high you will end up discouraged. Instead, set small, regular and achievable aims. Set a goal you know you can achieve, and then achieve it!
Now set another small goal and achieve that. The more you achieve small goals, the better you’ll feel. Soon you’ll be setting bigger (but still achievable) goals and achieving the too!
4. Build positive relationships
Build relationships with people who appreciate and support you. If a relationship isn’t mutually respectful or makes you unhappy then remove yourself from that relationship.
5. Physical confidence
Get moving and get active. Exercise can be incredibly empowering, it boosts your feel good hormones, improves your body and the way you feel about your body. Start with a walk around the block, 10 squats or a weekly swim – and see how you feel.
6. Take care of yourself
The more care you take of yourself, the better you’ll feel about yourself. Treat yourself to a pamper day every once in a while. Nourish your body, stay hydrated. Buy clothes that make you feel comfy, professional and confident. Do whatever you need to do to feel good about yourself.
7. Improve your posture
Your posture can affect how you feel about yourself. Stand up tall when you walk, sit up straight when you sit, and always hold your head up high. Not only will it make you look and feel more confident but a good posture will also reduce back pain and increase blood flow.
If you’re doing something that you’re nervous about give power stances a try. The most well–known and versatile high power pose is nicknamed “The Wonder Woman” pose. You simple stand tall with your chest out and your hands on your hips.
8. Travel outside your comfort zone
Do something that scares you every once in a while. Whether it’s making a speech, talking to a stranger at a party or taking up a new hobby. The more you practice the things that scare you, the less intimidating they become – and the more confidence you will have for new challenges.
9. Be Generous
Being generous is a great way to improve your self-image. When you spread kindness you start to feel good about yourself and see yourself as a good person.
Here are some effortless ways you can support good causes and do good.
10. Keep Calm
There is a correlation between confidence and calmness. When you feel confident about a task you feel calm about doing it. Trying to remain calm, even when you’re under pressure, will tend to make you feel more confident.
To do this it is useful to learn how to relax. Give some relaxation techniques a try.
There you have 10 steps to self-confidence, the rest is up to you! It’s time to put these tips into practise and starting logging your best – confidence-filled – life!
