I’ve been blogging for almost 5 years and in that time I’ve gained 2 degrees, had 7 jobs and earned money as an influencer. Blogging has been a great personal development tool throughout it all. I credit it for a lot of personal growth.
In this post I share some of the personal growth I’ve experienced and the skills developed as a result of running several blogs.
Why I Started Blogging
5 years ago I secured my first job outside of university. When I was offered the role they offered it to me on a job share basis (meaning I was offered a part-time role). I decided to take the job, despite wanting a full-time position and carry on looking for other odd jobs.
It was because of my job share that I had the time to explore blogging. Originally I started blogging to share my words of wisdom with friends and family. But 3 months into blogging I started to be offered paid work.
From there my blogging career blossomed. Earning money from something I enjoyed acted as motivation to take it to the next level. I started to put more time into my blog and spend my time looking up influencer marketing and SEO.
Blogging and personal growth
Becoming a ‘blogger influencer’ has opened my eyes to a lot. Previously I had no idea that you could earn money by writing words on the internet.
I’ve never really known what I wanted to be career wise and it’s starting to make sense to me why I’ve never found a career that I truly wanted to purse. I need the option to be creative, to work on my own schedule, and to have the freedom to pursue new options. Blogging is given me this.
I’ve always been quite shy, and you could say that being a blogger allows me to carry on being shy. But I feel like it’s allowed me to have confidence in who I am and what I do. Yes I don’t speak in front of 100’s or sit in a big office, but I do send out 100’s of emails a week, talk to the newspapers and promote myself on social media.
I’m proud of the personal growth I’ve experienced and the opportunities I’ve been offered as part of this crazy blogging life.
All the Skills
I wasn’t very academic at school but somehow made it to university, my writing skills have always been a weakness but creating my blog has allowed me to tackle my weaknesses head on. Here are some of the skills I’ve improved through blogging.
- Writing Skills. A key part of running a blog is writing all the content and as the saying goes ‘practise makes perfect’. I’ve certainly had a lot of practise while managing several blogs.
- Marketing. Creating content is one thing but promoting it is another. As a blogger I’ve been pushed into learning social media marketing, SEO and how to grow a newsletter.
- Design. You see my logo? My blog header? I created those. I’d have never had the opportunity to create cute little graphics without setting up my blogs.
- Niche Specific Knowledge. This blog is pretty niche-less but some of my other blogs are very niche specific. I have to make sure that I’m giving the right information and for that reason I’ve learned a lot of useful and specific knowledge.
I’ve loved setting up and running my blogs. I’ve grown and developed really useful skills along the way. I can’t wait to see the further development I make as I carry on growing my blogs.
